Resume & ATS Guides — Get Past Screening
Your resume has two readers: a parser and a person. These guides show how to satisfy both without stuffing keywords or flattening your personality.
Quick checklist
- Use a single-column, text-based file with standard section headings
- Mirror the posting's exact skill phrases inside achievement bullets
- Quantify at least half of your bullets with a number or timeframe
- Keep a master resume, then tailor a version per application

Is PDF or Word better for an ATS?
Both work with modern systems as long as the PDF contains selectable text. If a posting specifies a format, follow it exactly.
How long should my resume be?
One page for under five years of experience, two pages for most mid and senior professionals, and up to three for academic or executive profiles with publications or board roles.
How many keywords should a resume contain?
There is no magic number. Cover the priority terms from the posting inside real achievement bullets — typically eight to fifteen distinct terms — and stop there.
Should I use a skills section?
Yes, a short one. It helps parsers categorise your capabilities. It should support your experience bullets, not replace them.
Is a one-page resume still required?
Only early in your career. Beyond five years, two well-organised pages read better than one cramped page with 9pt text.
Should I include a photo?
Follow the market. Photos are standard in parts of Europe and the Gulf, and discouraged in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
